Nine yet-to-be-identified ladies who were trapped when a storey building around Akinwunmi Street, Mende, in the Maryland area of Lagos State, sunk due to torrential rainfall were rescued on Monday.
The Lagos Territorial Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency, Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the development in a statement.
He said the agency’s officials were deployed to rescue the victims after receiving a distress call about the emergency.
He said in a WhatsApp message that, “the torrential rainfall which lasted about four hours in the early hours of the day flooded lots of communities in Lagos. NEMA advance team close observations called for more reinforcement of personnel.”
NEMA said nine persons mostly women, were rescued from the building and that the landlord of the building had use ladder to escape.
It was learnt that the Landlord was later arrested and handed over to the police after NEMA questioned him for failure to contact emergency responders.“
The Agencies now are LASEMA, State Fire Service and Police Disaster Management Unit. Rescue activities have commence. All the 9 trapped ladies have been successful rescued<” Farinloye said.
