Muslim-Muslim Ticket: Nigeria needs leaders of competence and commitment – Adedibu

Ahead of 2023 general elections, Nigerians and electorates have been urged to consider competency, dexterity, capacity, knowledge and skills in doing things as religion or ethnic consideration is not healthy in politics and polity.

Prof (Dr) Adedibu Aderemi Abass, the Eldest Son of late High Chief Lamidi Ariyibi Adedibu while speaking as a guest on AIM FM TV’s Politics Today on Saturday, maintained Muslim/ Muslim or Muslim/ Christian ticket should never be a condition in choosing who to vote for during the election.

He said, “What we want is to win the election and form an administration that will rule with fairness, justice, a government that will make a poor Nigerian live a life without hardship and in peace.”

“Way forward for any country is not to talk of religion, for any country to progress you don’t talk of religion, you talk of credibility, one of the reasons why Nigeria is still backward is putting religion as a priority, when we start talking of religion we are creating problem for ourselves.”

” On the issue of Muslim/ Muslim or Muslim/ Christian ticket, during the time of Abiola it was Muslim/ Muslim, but we had two political system, nobody focused on anything religion then, what was important to Nigerians then was how to remove the military from position and let civilian take over in 1993.”

“That period there were states that had Muslim/Muslim and the Christian/Christian leaders and no one was complaining, talking of Presidential race after Abiola, in the constitution which needs to be reveiwed, it says there must be involvement of the two religion and this is causing a problem for us which we are still battling with.”

“Good leadership can come from anywhere… The best is the one that mixes up everybody, Muslim, Christian and everybody feels comfortable,” he said.

“Speaking on amendment of the constitution, politicians should not be involved but just Nigerians who have the fear of God and respect for their country.”

Still Speaking further on national issues, Prof. Adedibu backed the move by National Assembly members to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari over his failure to end terrorism in the country.

Members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had, on june 27, given President Buhari a six-week ultimatum to end insecurity or be impeached.

Supporting the move by the lawmakers, Professor Adedibu submitted that President Buhari had failed in the promises he made to Nigerians.

He noted that the numerous challenges, including insecurity and ailing economy, facing the country pointed to the leadership failure on the part of the president.

He said, “Very often, the grounds for breach of contract, I think we all agree, is mis-governance and one of the ways of breaking this kind of contract we know even before the duration of a contract is known as impeachment.”

Though, Prof. Adedibu said the threat by lawmakers to sack Buhari from office was justified.

He, however, said the impeachment move was unrealistic owing to the stringent constitutional provisions and the timeframe required to complete the process vis-a-vis the time the Buhari’s presidency would elapse.

“The lawmakers may not get the majority of votes needed,” he said.

“Most of the senate and representatives are extremely weak, if they are not weak, what president has been exhibiting impeachable characters and he is supposed to impeached by now.”

“The United States Constitution says, if a president is found wanting of charges, members have the right to impeach, but the Nigerian constitution is a shambles which needs to be reviewed.”
