Eid-el-Kabir: Sallah Ram Is Not Obligatory, Muslim Cleric, Agba Jeje says

Alfa Jeje in AIM FM TV

Alfa Jeje called on all Nigerians ahead of Eid el-Kabir celebration to tolerate one another and contribute to national peace and unity.

Speaking on the special program in Yoruba language, he made the call on where he urged both Muslims and Christians in Nigeria to unite and peacefully coexist.

On celebrating Eid amid economic recession, he advised Nigerians to be resolute and prayerful.

The Islamic Scholar said that the sacrificial ram for Sallah celebration is permissible but not obligatory compared to the five pillars of Islam.

He said: “Considering the current economic situation, Muslims should prioritize their need and ensure they provide basic necessities for the family, especially accommodation, feeding, medication, education and mobility.

Quoting from the Holy Quran, Alfa Jeje said: “La yukallifullahu nafsan illa wus’aha- which means Almighty Allah does not place burden on a person beyond his ability in any situation.”

He said for those that can afford Sallah rams, they must follow the principle of Zakat. He said the ram should be shared into three parts.

“The first part is meant for the family, second part should be given as Zakat (gift) to the neighbours including Non-Muslims and Muslims that could not afford it and the last part for the less privilege in the society,” he concluded.

The Islamic cleric also has harped on the need for special prayers and fasting on Arafat day quoting from the Hadiths that “It is a sin not to believe your sins have not been forgiven on Arafat day.”

After mentioning buying rams is not compulsory, Alfa jeje emphasized on the spiritual significance of the celebration.

“The most important thing is the praises we offer on Eid. For instance, on the eve of the Eid-el-kabir, we offer fast from sun-up to sunset to mark the day of Arafat. I think that is the most important aspect of the celebration.”

“The spiritual aspect of Eid-el-Kabir ought to be very important to all Muslims.”
